Australia-India Border-Gavaskar Series Kicks Off in Perth in Late November

Australia’s upcoming cricket season promises an exciting start with the highly anticipated five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy set to commence at Perth Stadium on November 22. The series will then progress to Adelaide for a day-night Test, followed by matches in Brisbane, Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test, and Sydney for the New Year’s Test.

Cricket Australia unveiled their international schedule, positioning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as the centerpiece of the summer’s cricketing calendar. The decision to open the series in Perth, rather than Brisbane’s Gabba, was influenced by various factors, including favorable broadcast time zones for both Australian and Indian audiences.

Peter Roach, CA’s head of scheduling, emphasized the national team’s preference for starting series strongly at venues where they feel comfortable. Perth and Brisbane were deemed comparable in terms of pitch conditions, with both offering challenging and bouncy surfaces. Additionally, Adelaide’s reputation for hosting day-night Tests further influenced the scheduling decision.

Outgoing WA Cricket CEO Christina Matthews expressed optimism for significant attendance at Perth Stadium, highlighting the importance of securing a spot in the cricketing calendar. While her preference was for the pre-Christmas Test, she acknowledged the value of consistent scheduling for planning purposes.

Australia aims to capitalize on their home advantage by scheduling a nine-day gap between the first two Tests, allowing for potential pink-ball practice sessions for India’s players. Options such as a Prime Minister’s XI match in Canberra are being explored to provide valuable match practice during the interval.
